The 7-Point On-Page SEO Checklist Most Treasure Valley Websites Fail

July 31, 2026

Most of the SEO conversation happens somewhere out in the wild — backlinks, directories, algorithm updates, whatever Google announced last week. Meanwhile the stuff you actually control sits untouched on your own website.

That's on-page SEO: the words, structure, and technical details on each individual page that tell Google what the page is about and whether it's worth showing to someone. It's not glamorous. But it's the cheapest ranking work available to a small business, because nobody has to approve it but you. Here's the checklist we run on Treasure Valley sites — and where most of them come up short.

1. One clear target per page

The most common mistake isn't a missing keyword. It's a page trying to be about five things at once. A single "Services" page covering plumbing, HVAC, drain cleaning, water heaters, and remodels will rank for none of them well.

Pick one primary topic per page and let the page be genuinely about that. If you offer six services, that's six pages. Google ranks pages, not businesses.

2. A title tag written for a human who's searching

The title tag is the blue clickable line in search results, and it carries more ranking weight than almost anything else on the page. Yet plenty of Idaho business sites still have titles like "Home | Welcome" or the company name repeated on every single page.

Write it like a promise: what the page delivers, where you do it, roughly 55-60 characters. "Water Heater Repair in Nampa & Caldwell | [Business Name]" beats "Services" every time.

3. A meta description that earns the click

Meta descriptions aren't a direct ranking factor, but they're the sales pitch under your title. A vague one — or a blank one, which Google then fills with random page text — costs you clicks you already earned.

One or two sentences, under 155 characters, saying what someone gets and why you. That's it.

4. Headings that actually outline the page

Your H1 should appear once and match the page's topic. Your H2s should break the content into real sections a person can scan. Too many sites use headings purely for font size — a big bold line here, a slightly smaller one there — and the underlying structure is nonsense.

If someone read only your headings, they should understand the page. If they can't, neither can Google.

5. Enough content to answer the question

There's no magic word count. But a service page with two sentences and a phone number gives Google nothing to work with, and it gives a customer even less. If someone lands there wondering about pricing, timelines, service area, or what the process looks like, and the page doesn't say — you've lost them and the ranking.

Write like you're answering the questions you get on the phone every week. That's usually 500-900 words, and it writes itself.

6. Internal links that connect the dots

Internal linking is the most underused move on this list. When your blog post about furnace maintenance links to your heating service page, you're telling Google that page matters — and you're moving a reader closer to booking.

Link with descriptive anchor text, not "click here." Every important page on your site should be reachable in a couple of clicks from the homepage.

7. Images and speed that don't sabotage the rest

Uncompressed photos straight off a phone are the number one reason small business sites load slowly, and slow pages lose rankings and visitors at the same time. Resize before uploading, use descriptive file names, and write real alt text — it helps accessibility and gives Google more context.

Where to start

Don't try to fix all seven across your whole site in one weekend. Start with the three or four pages that matter most to your revenue — usually your top services and your main location page — and work the checklist top to bottom on each one. That focused pass typically moves the needle more than a hundred scattered tweaks.

On-page work is also the foundation everything else sits on. Local SEO, content, ads driving traffic to landing pages — all of it performs better when the underlying pages are built right. It's part of what we handle under internet marketing and SEO services for businesses across the Treasure Valley.
